17 Years Ago Today
From my 80s journal (that spilled into the 90s.) A first date. May 4, 1991
I worked from 10am - 6pm. After work I came home and got ready for my date with Kristi. I picked her up at 6:45 pm. I went in and met her mom and Grandmas. Then we left. We talked pretty much the whole way. Not about anything important though. We ate at Noble Romans. We talked quite a bit in there. Our waiter was slow. We were 30 minutes late getting to the movie. We saw "Dances With Wolves." I just saw it a couple weeks ago, so I told her about what we missed. Debbie and Jamie were there too. We talked to them after the movie. The ride home went fine. I asked her if her parents thought I was too old for her to go out with. She said no, but that they joked about it, and that it was the same age difference between Brad and Lori when they were going out. We got to her house at about 11:45pm. When we got to her house, Ben Hahn and Lori had just gotten home from NorthWood's prom. Oh, yeh, when we were eating at Noble Roman's, Kristi invited me to go to a lock in at her church this Friday night. So, when I got to her house I stopped the car and said "Well, I guess I'll see you Friday." Then she invited me to come in. We talked to Ben and Lori for about 30 minutes, then they went to the afterprom. I stayed another 15 minutes, till 12:45am, and talked to Kristi. When I left I kissed her on the cheek. She's a sweetheart. I'm happy with the way our date went, and with the way things are going.
- I had just finished my freshman year of college.
- I worked at Radio Shack in Nappanee.
- Debbie and Jamie Prenkert got married two weeks after Kristi and I did.
- Ben and Lori got married six months before Kristi and I did.
- The Noble Roman's isn't open anymore.
- The movie was at the theatre behind Best Buy in Mishawaka.
- Notice it says "met her mom and grandmas." I'm positive both of Kristi's grandmas didn't just happen to be there at the time I was picking Kristi up.
- The Prom, a first date. . . this must have been a terrifying day for Kristi's parents.
- I had a cell phone in my car, in 1991! Thanks Radio Shack!
- I liked my car, a 1985 Nissan 300ZX. Thanks Dad!
My car looked like this.

Wow. That's like a blast from my past. I remember that day vivdly. (Not you meeting Kristi's grandmas, but you know what I mean.)
Deb periodically reminisces about how she and Alicia used to "ride in Steve's car like dogs" with the T tops off.
Fun times.
I can't believe that was 17 years ago. We certainly had some great times to reminisce about.
There's been quite a bit about Rocki on my blog recently. I should try to find a journal entry from 18 years ago when she told us WE were weird.
I really like reading your old journal entries!
I remember once when I was staying with Grandma Vi and got really homesick, you and your friends were going to play put put and took me along. I rode in the back-back with someone else. That was fun! (Also, that is when I stopped liking New Kids on the Block, because I was afraid you guys would make fun of me!)

I found it! I’ve been fishing around in the attic and on the bookshelf this week trying to locate my journal entry for May 4, 1991. My persistence paid off tonight!
The BIG DAY!!! It was so sweet of Steve to ask me out the night of the prom. I got ready from 4:30-6:00. I wore my Brazil maroon jeans and my peach Brazil shirt. Steve wore Guess jeans and a white, maroon, green and navy striped shirt. He came to the front door. I invited him in and introduced him to Mamaw, Mom, and Grandma. They anxiously sat at the kitchen table after taking pictures of Ben and Lori before prom. We left. His car is so cool. We ate at Noble Roman’s for pizza. We didn’t eat much because we were late for the movie, “Dances with Wolves.” We got to the movie and weren’t very late at all. Debbie and Jamie were there too, but we didn’t sit right by them. The scenery in the movie was beautiful. It was long, but I enjoyed it. When he walked me to the front door, he gave me a very sweet kiss on the cheek! What a night!
-I still have the outfit I wore on our first date. I bought it when I went to Brazil to visit Renee Witmer December 1990.
-I miss that car.
-Yeah, my grandmas were checkin' you out.
-You called to ask me out on April 29th. I hung up the phone, danced around, screamed. Then, I about strangled Lori when she told me she had known you were going to ask me out since she went to Anderson with Jamie.
Okay- I'm having so much fun reading these 80's blogs. Wow - it takes me back.
I searched in the creepy basement for my "journals". Well I never was real good at journaling - mine are more like Calendar entries with exclaimation points every so often. Here is what I said about May 4, 1991
Weeded around the house. Plant flowers. Sleep 1 1/2 hours. The Prom. Ben picked me up at 6:15, took pictures at my house and at his. To Port-a-Pit. Magic show, eating, dancing. We got Prom King and queen!! To after prom (won prizes). Watched "Ghost" till 4:00am.
Well I wish I would have wrote more - and maybe I do have a journal stashed away somewhere, but who has time to write when you're watching movies until 4am? I do remember my strapless PURPLE dress with matching shoes and jewlery.
