Trip to Chicago

We took a short family trip to Chicago this week, riding the South Shore Railway from South Bend to Chicago on Tuesday and coming back Thursday afternoon. We stayed in the Loop at the Palmer House Hilton. Here's a slide show from our trip along with some captions.

It was a good time! And the hotel was fabulous. But just to make sure no one thinks we are off blowing our money on expensive Chicago vacations . . . here's some additional info.

I got the hotel on Priceline for a good (for downtown Chicago) price ($70 a night.) When we got to the hotel we upgraded for $29 a night to the "Executive Floor." (I had read on TripAdvisor about doing this.) Upgrading got us free Internet access, breakfast, snacks, a light supper, pop and express elevators. I probably would have paid $10 a day just for the express elevators. They were SO nice!

So it was a relatively inexpensive trip. The train ride and parking at the South Bend Airport were about $60 total. I think next time we will drive to Michigan City and ride the train from there. It looked like parking would be free there and we wouldn't have to ride the train quite so long (which would be good.) And we still wouldn't have to deal with driving in Chicago (which would also be good.)

The only other thing we bought was some food - but not very much because we ate mostly free (well included) stuff at the hotel. We didn't buy a SINGLE item that we brought home. Which was partly because we were trying to travel on the cheap and partly because we didn't want to have to lug another item home in our four backpacks.

As the photo slide show plays, you may notice that the pictures constantly show us doing things that were free.

I will have to blog about our trip to Ludington. It was so much fun too, and very cheap. You and I both appreciate a cheap vacation with lots of fun. You need to give me the lowdown on what to do in Chi-town for free. I can't believe we have never done Chicago!

In mid-July, we spent a night at the Palmer House, booked on Priceline for $45(!) and were upgraded to the executive floor without paying any more. Mind you, that was because we checked in quite late. So we couldn't take full advantage of all the perks. But I'm so glad you knew about the upgrade. It's great.

$45, with free upgrade to the executive floor? That's amazing! I had put $55 into Priceline first, but didn't get it. I think Hotwire had a 3 1/2 star for $75, so I didn't want to go higher than that.

The location of the Palmer House was perfect for the stuff we wanted to do.
